1x12 ICON Nickel gap was used to complement the Cedar Shakes
Squam lake
Nestled into the shoreline of Squam Lake, this residence called for a modern-rustic aesthetic with clean lines and regional warmth. The project team initially sought wide Western red cedar boards, but material availability challenges led them to explore alternatives. The team ultimately selected a custom profile, 1x12 Nickel Gap ICON CVG Douglas Fir, offering both the look they wanted and a product they could count on.

Why ICON
ICON was chosen for its ability to replicate the warm, natural look of cedar—while offering greater durability and installation efficiency. Its thermally modified process delivers Class 1 durability, critical for an exposed lakeside environment, and the CVG Douglas Fir's warm color mimicked the look of natural old growth Cedar as well.

Project Benefits
ICON's consistent 1x12 profile and vertical grain provided the crisp, modern lines the team wanted, without the sourcing challenges and softness often associated with cedar. Installers appreciated the clean miters and reduced surface damage—particularly important given the prominent placement around windows and rooflines.

Design Notes
The final finish included a natural oil treatment to harmonize trim and siding elements. When paired with authentic cedar shingles on adjacent elevations, ICON stood out for its consistency and clarity.
