WHY ICON®

Winter Holben selected ICON Radiata Pine for this project to achieve a balance of natural character, weathered aesthetic, and cost-effective performance for their new headquarters. The firm was specifically seeking a thermally modified product that would develop a patina over time and maintain a sense of texture, not overly clean or uniform. ICON Radiata Pine stood out for its ability to meet both their intended aesthetic and budget parameters.

The team also needed a material that would age gracefully. ICON Radiata Pine was pre-finished with CUTEK® Colortones, allowing the cladding to immediately reflect the “weathered” look the team envisioned .

Design Notes

This project explores the intersection of raw materials and refined architecture. The design team intentionally paired ICON Radiata Pine with untreated metal that will rust naturally over time. The idea was to let both materials weather in tandem, creating a patina story that reflects the environment.

ICON Radiata Pine's texture and tone were important. Less structured than ICON Douglas Fir, but still consistent enough to look clean on a modern form. It offered that elusive balance between natural variation and architectural order, helping the facade feel both grounded and elevated.

The result is a design that is regional, honest, and timeless. Where the material tells a story, right from day one.

PROJECT IMPACT

ICON Radiata Pine delivered both aesthetic value and practical performance. Its availability in long lengths allowed for clean, continuous lines with fewer seams, helping to reinforce the modern form of the structure.

ICON Radiata Pine's accessible price point made it possible to feature wood more extensively throughout the exterior, without compromising on design or durability. This made ICON Radiata Pine not only a design win, but a project-enabling material.

Our thermal modification process provided the durability and stability required for New England’s coastal climate, giving the team peace of mind around longevity and weathering.
