INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
For ICON® Trim Boards and Patterns
NAILING
To fasten ICON® use stainless steel fasteners are preferable, however, hot dipped galvanized or high tensile aluminum fasteners are acceptable alternatives.
All nailing should be over studs and total effective penetration into a solid wood base should be at least 1 – ½”. Penetration is 1 – ¼” with ring shank nails.
Spacing: Use 2 face nails for 1x3-1x6 to properly secure ICONICON™. Use 3-4 face nails for 1x8-1x12 to properly secure ICONICON™ to the substrate.
Hand nailing is recommended. If a nail gun is used, the precise adjustment of air pressure is necessary to achieve a flush finish. If ICONICON™ is being painted, alternately, nails can be countersunk 1/16” and filled with putty to obtain a smooth surface.
Pre-drilling approximately 1” from the ends is recommended to avoid any possibility of end splitting.
INSTALLATION
Ensure all flashings, sealant, and building paper have been correctly applied. A minimum ground clearance of 6” is recommended for ICON®. In all installation applications, please use industry best practices..
TRIMMING, CUTTING, AND SEALANT REQUIREMENTS
If ICON® is being painted, although not required, we recommend, priming all cuts and rips to maintain optimum appearance and reduce potential moisture uptake, as is good building practice.
PUTTIES, MASTICS, SEALANTS
Thoroughly caulk all joints, including butt joints, where trim meets siding and all other details. Putties, mastics and sealants should be compatible with any alkyd or latex paints you intend to use. Please refer to the paint and caulk manufacturers requirements for best practices and compliance with all warranties.
PAINTING
If ICON® is being painted:
- Application of topcoats must be within 1 year.
All nail holes should be filled with and exterior filler as per manufacturer’s instructions. - If ICON® has been exposed to the weather for an extended period and has surface contaminants including dirt, oils or surface oxidation, lightly sand to remove these contaminants prior to priming.
- Apply 1 coat of high qualityhigh quality latex or alkyd primer allowing sufficient time for primer to dry.
- Then apply 2 coats of high qualityhigh quality latex per the manufacturer’s specifications..
